Why Refer To A Registered Dietitian (RD)?

Nutrition Is Too Important to Be an Afterthought

Nutrition plays a central role in the prevention and management of chronic disease, yet meaningful nutrition counseling is difficult to deliver within the constraints of routine visits. Integrating registered dietitians into the care team provides patients with focused nutrition and behavior-change counseling while allowing referring providers to concentrate on medical and therapeutic care.

When integrated into care, RD-led Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) has been shown to:
  • Improve glycemic control, lipid levels, and blood pressure
  • Reduce medication utilization and hospital admissions
  • Improve patient engagement and follow-through
  • Deliver a significant return on investment

Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are uniquely trained in MNT and behavior-change counseling.

Evidence also supports the economic value of nutrition care at the healthcare system level. Analyses of payer data show that MNT delivered by registered dietitians is associated with reduced overall medical spending, and driven by fewer hospitalizations and physician visits, particularly among high-risk Medicare populations.
